Parent Conferences
It was wonderful to meet with so many families and share the students' progress to date. Everyone has grown so much in the first 50 days of first grade. If we haven't had a chance to meet or you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I am always willing to schedule a meeting or have a phone conversation.Reading at Home
At several conferences we discussed sight word lists and book bags for reading practice at home. Those lists and bags will be coming home in backpacks in the next few days. Remember each child should be reading 20 minutes a night. This can be a combination of independent reading and being read to. The more students engage with text, the more quickly they will become independent with their reading strategies. If you are struggling to find "just right" books for your child, please let me know and I can provide some books to read at home. Book bags should be returned when all the books have been read, the books seem to "easy" or when you just want something new to read. It is important to remember that many readers are still relying on checking the pictures and using the pattern of the text to help them read. Please encourage the reader to ask himself/herself "Does it look right?" "Does it sound right?" and "Does it make sense?". Above all while reading at home, please keep reading fun. The practice is important but so is the love of reading. Here is a graphic created by Kayla S that quickly summarizes the research on reading minutes.
Discovery
During our discovery block, we finished up our experiment about healthy teeth. We have been soaking eggs in soda and Gatorade for a week and a half. Today we tried to clean the eggs with toothpaste and a toothbrush. Ask your child what she/he learned.
