Weekly wrap-up, January 18, 2019

It has been a busy return to school since the December break.  Our class has had several students out with illness.  I have also been out with a sick child and being sick myself.  We are constantly reminding students about not putting their hands near their mouths and requiring frequent handwashing.  I'm hopeful that the next few weeks will be healthier ones for everyone.

I'm please to report that when I was out I received very positive reports from all the teachers that filled in.  Mrs. Parker and the substitutes complimented the class on their flexibility and willingness to help out.

Literacy

In both reading and writing, we are focusing on non-fiction.  Students are learning to read and write "teaching" books.  They are experts about many topics and we have quite a variety of non-fiction books in progress.

Hallway Cubbies

We have several students that have developed a habit of dropping their winter gear in the middle of the hallway.  This is an unsafe practice for several reasons.  As a class we have discussed how our cubbies are in front of the exit doors.  We also find that items are becoming "lost" or damaged when other groups leave and exit the building.  We've been working on reminders and support to help them remember it is important to take responsibility for their belongings.  Today we started a new plan.  After snack and after recess, I will check the hallway for stray items.  Items that are not where they should be will be gathered up into my bag.  Students will then need to complete a community service type chore to earn their items back.

Winter Wellness

Our Winter Wellness activities are about to begin.  Your child should have received a note with specific information about his/her activity.  The dates of Winter Wellness are Monday 1/28, Tuesday 2/5 and Monday 2/11.  If you have questions about these activities, please let me know.
