Big Buddies and Math

On Friday, with the help of our big buddies, we completed a math self-evaluation.  The first graders were tasked with "proving" to their buddies that they knew a math concept.  This activity was one of the many that we will engage in to help prepare for student led conferences.  It was wonderful to watch how engaged and eager the students were to show off.  I was also impressed with the seriousness with the older students took the task.

 Geometry
We are working on a geometry unit in conjunction with our measurement unit.  We are currently learning the names of common 2D shapes and how to sort shapes based on their defining attributes.  Some of the shapes we are learning about include:  triangle, square, rectangle, hexagon, rhombus and trapezoid.  We have been having lengthy conversations about how shapes are similar and how they are different.  One interesting aspect of geometry is how shapes can be classified into multiple categories.  For example, a square is a specific type of rectangle.  However not all rectangles are squares.
