Weekly Wrap-up, January 26th

Math

During Math time, we have been focusing on problem solving.  Problem solving is an opportunity for students to demonstrate their understanding of math concepts at a deeper level.  The problems we solve go beyond the basic word problems they encountered in kindergarten.  We typically begin with a warm-up problem that has one solution and then extend the problem to include a variety of acceptable solutions.  This can be a bit overwhelming for some students as not having a definite "right" answer feels uncomfortable.  However, it is important that students learn to think about problems and not just generate answers.  We talk a lot about being flexible and work together to share strategies.

An example of our recent problem solving is displayed on the bulletin board outside our classroom.  We worked with "snowballs" to build snowmen.  The problem displayed on the board is "How many snowmen could you make with 12 snowballs, if each snowman has either 2 or 3 snowballs?".  Students solved the problem and then wrote a math equation that matched their thinking.

We will continue to work on problem solving strategies such as using manipulatives and drawing pictures.  Eventually, the students will be writing problems for their classmates to solve.

Communication Folders

Folders were sent home today with many notices and some student work.  The notices include a letter from Mary Beth Langevin about Guidance classes, assignments for Winter Wellness, and school lunch statements.  If your child was absent or forgot his/her folder, I will send it home on Monday.  Our first Winter Wellness will be Tuesday, January 30th.  We will have a typical morning and then divide into groups for our healthy afternoon activities.  Please refer to the letter for guidance regarding what to pack for your child as the suggestions vary based on your child's destination.

Progress Reports

Progress reports were mailed home today by the main office.  If you don't receive your copy by early next week please let me know.  Please remember this is an updated report card format.  If you have questions or concerns about your child's progress please do not hesitate to contact me.  If you have concerns about the report card itself, there will be an opportunity to provide feedback on that as well.

100 Days of School

Coming soon...  the 100th day of School...Week of February 5th
We will be celebrating our 100th day of school in less than 2 weeks!  We will be completing all sorts of fun activities related to the number 100 on the 100th day!

Students will be bringing in collections of 100. Please help your child find and select a collection of 100 items. The collection should be easily transported and reasonable size (gallon size ziploc bag or poster).  Examples of items could be 100 paper clips, 100 stickers, 100 pennies, 100 puzzle pieces, 100 pompoms, etc.  The possibilities are endless!

We will also be creating a 100 day snack mix.  If you are able to donate to the snack mix, please send in one box or bag of small “snack” ingredients.  Students will be selecting from the items to create their own unique recipe of 100 items.  Some ideas for ingredients include:  raisins, pretzel sticks, chocolate chips, cheerios, animal crackers, mini marshmallows, dried fruit, etc.

PE Lab

Our PE lab scheduled for January 31st has been postponed.  I will let you know when it is rescheduled.
