Weekly Wrap-up: June 2nd

Fairy Tales
We have been hard at work reading and writing fairy tales.  The class is really enjoying fractured fairy tales.  Fractured fairy tales are altered versions of traditional tales.  The class is also working on preparing readers theater pieces that they will present at our Fairy Tale Festival on Friday, June 9th.  Although costumes are not required, many students are planning to "dress-up" for their roles.

Fairy Tale Celebration
On Friday, June 9th we will be celebrating the culmination of Fairy Tale Unit.  Students will share their work and present short reader's theater pieces.  We will then enjoy some special snacks.  This event is open to all families.  If you are planning to bring younger siblings, please be thoughtful about their ability to sit quietly during the plays.  It can be a bit tricky for young performers to concentrate in front of an audience.

If you are interested in contributing to our party, please let me know.

Telling Time
We have continued to work on telling time.  Students are now comfortable with telling the hour first and then the minutes.  We have learned several songs to help us remember the difference between the hour and minute hands.  One of our favorites is sung to the tune of I'm a Little Teapot.
I'm a smaller hour hand, short and stout.
I tell the hour and give a shout.
I'm a longer minute hand, big and tall.
I tell the minute and that's all.

Light and Sound
During discovery we have experimented with both light and sound.  We've learned that light travels in a straight line and that sound travels in waves.  We've also used flashlights and mirrors to begin to understand the concepts of transparent, translucent and opaque.

Upcoming Events
Field Day is Friday, June 16th.  First grade students participate in the morning only.  Each student will be assigned to a multi-age team.  The teams are each assigned a color.  I will send home a notice with the colors for field day as soon as I know them.  Typically this is about a week before field day.  Your child is not required to have color of his/her team.

Montshire Museum Field Trip - June 19th.  Permission slips were sent home and returned for this trip already.  More details about what to bring on the trip will be sent home next week.

Last day of school - June 20th - This is an early release day. If your child will be leaving school prior to Tuesday, June 20th, please let me know.  I want to be sure he/she receives all end of the year items and work.
