Weekly Wrap-up: May 18th

Friday Folders
There are two important documents in this week's Friday Folders:  Summer Book Bag Letter and class placement letters.  Please be sure to check your child's folder (or bag for those without a folder) to be sure you see these important items.  Summer Book Bag permission letters should be returned as soon as possible.

Exploring sound
We have continued to learn about light and sound.  Students are also learning about making observations and changing variables.  First graders are wonderful at asking questions like scientists.  We conducted a sound exploration using yarn, silverware and a popsicle stick.  Students discovered that different silverware made different sounds when struck by a popsicle stick.  They also decided that they made different sounds because of different vibrations.  They also tested out plastic silverware to see if they would hear a vibration.   Don't be surprised if your child tries to test the sound of your silverware.

Special Activities
This has been a busy week full of special activities.  We began the week with ECO on Tuesday.  On Wednesday morning we had an all-school assembly to celebrate kindness and recognize students.  Thursday was K-3 Concert and Friday we toured the 5/6 castles.

Concert
The K-3 Concert was an impressive display of the musical growth the class has made since the beginning of the year.  Congratulations to all the students and to Ms. Gelfon for their hard work.

Castles
Friday afternoon we toured the castles created and built by the fifth and sixth grade students in Mrs. Knoedler and Mr. Quackenbush's classes.  Our class was impressed by the amount of time and effort the students had clearly put into their projects.  Ask your child what he/she learned about castles and their defenses, you might be surprised at how much they learned from the explanations of the older students.

Upcoming Events
Book Buddies: Each year students at U-32 write books for first grade students in the WCSU district.  On Friday, May 26th we will travel to U-32 to meet the seventh grade students and to receive our books.  We will leave school at approximately 9:10 and return to school around 11:10.   Look for a permission slip for the U-32 Book Buddy Trip in bags on Monday. Please return the permission slip as soon as possible.

Montshire Museum:  On June 19th we will be travelling by bus to the Montshire Museum.  This is a first and second grade field trip.  Look for more information about this trip in next week's blog.

Technology Night
June 15th – Save the Date for Technology Night
Come to EMES from 6 to 7:30 to:
*see student created technology projects
* learn how to program
* be challenged to code robots

All students from 1st through 6th grade are invited to share projects they created this year.  In addition to viewing student work, there will be several stations set up and run by the 5th and 6th grade Tech Club.  Adults and students are encouraged to move around the stations to learn how to code a variety of robots.

We hope you can join us for an evening of student work (projects range from videos to print media and are integrated across curriculum content areas) and interactive robot challenges!

Book Bags
Please have your child look for books and book bags that belong in the classroom, we seem to be missing quite a few of both.
