Weekly Wrap-up, February 23, 2018

We have been very busy in first grade with lots of reading, writing, math and our animal unit!  I am so proud of all the students and the wonderful growth they are making.  Recently, our class has been reading up a storm and the majority of the class is now ready to begin early chapter books.  Some great first series are Henry and Mudge, Poppleton, Mr. Putter and Tabby, Fly Guy and Frog and Toad.  It is important to continue to read on a daily basis, especially over vacation to maintain the progress they have made.  While they are now readers and capable of reading on their own, students still benefit from being read to and from discussing the books that they are reading with others.

Animal Unit

We presented most of the work of our animal unit at Celebration of Learning last night.  This unit was an integrated science, literacy and technology unit addressing a variety of standards and transferable skills.  In addition to knowledge about animals, the class gained many collaborative skills.  If you did not get a chance to attend Celebration of Learning or would like to share the work with others, it is linked on the EMES library webpage.  Both the readers' theater performances and an electronic version of the books are available on the website.

Good bye

Today we said good-bye to our classmate James.  He is moving with his family to Cabot.  We wish he and his family well.  James will be missed.
