Collections for Opinion Writing
We have begun our opinion writing unit. Several of our lessons will involve “judging” our own mini-collections. I am asking students to bring in a “mini-collection” of items for these lessons. These collections will be kept at school for about 2 weeks and will then be sent home. Please send the collection in by Wednesday.
Collections should:
- Include 3-5 items of the same category (but not identical items)
- Be small enough to fit in a small shoe box or ziploc bag
- Not be food items
Some suggestions for collection items:
Sea shells
Plastic animal figures
Buttons
Stamps
Matchbox cars
Having a personal collection often helps the children to be invested in the activities. I will be asking children to select the “best” item from their collections and explain WHY they picked that item. The point of these activities is to provide concrete experience with forming opinions and articulating reasons.
