Weekly Wrap Up - February 17th

Wow! It has been a week full of schedule changes and special activities.  We began the week with a snow day, followed by Valentine's Day, Winter Wellness and I Love East Montpelier Day.  Friday morning we had our first E.C.O. of the year.

Moon Rocks!
Today in Discovery we created moon rocks!  We mixed baking soda, glitter, water and washable black paint together and formed rocks.  The rocks will dry over the weekend and we will observe them next week.  Your child may have a bit of black on his/her hands but it should wash off with warm water and soap.

ECO
We had a wonderful time outside in the snow today.  We learned a new game "Voles, Run for Your Lives.", practiced tracking, and built in the snow.  Angie told a folk tale about how Coyote and his animal friends brought fire to people.

Food Drive

We are still collecting food for the East Montpelier/Calais Food Shelf.  There is a collection box in our classroom.

Math
In math, we have continued to work on problem solving and using different combinations to create the same quantity.  I taught the class a new game, "I Spy Combinations" which they are really enjoying.  This game is a great way to practice facts as well as to develop flexible thinking.  Your child should be able to explain how to play.  You need a deck of cards.  We arrange the cards in a grid of 4 rows with 5 cards in each row.  The first player identifies a sum, I spy two cards that add up to ____.  But doesn't tell which cards. Player two then tries to find cards that are touching (horizontal, vertical or diagonal) that have the same sum.  The cards can be the same cards as player 1 saw or a different combination of cards.  If player two finds 2 cards with the correct sum, he/she takes the cards and replaces those cards with new cards from the unused deck.  Player 2 then identifies the sum and players continue to alternate spying and finding.

Spirit Week
Next week will also have some special events as it is E.M.E.S. Spirit Week.

Tuesday - Crazy Hat and Hair Day
Wednesday - Clone Day - partner up with as many people as you want and dress alike
Thursday - Colorful Clash Day!  wear mismatching clothes on purpose
Friday - Comfy Cozy Day
