We have had a wonderful week in first grade. The class has certainly had a lot of energy and is looking forward to break. Despite being excited, we have continued to work on reading, writing, and math.
In reading, we have continued our study of Jan Brett books as well as our "Word Detective" work. As word detectives, we have been learning about breaking larger words into smaller pieces, looking for parts that we know and are begining to learn about word endings (suffixes such as ing, ed, s) Students have also read many books written by Jan Brett. We have focused on reading fluently by reading and performing The Hat and Hedgie's Surprise. Students learned to read with expression and to make their voices sound like the character was talking.
Kindness Elf
The kindness focus has been very successful. The students have learned to recognize and acknowledge kindness in others. They are becoming much more likely to thank others for their kind actions. As a class, they have participated in numerous kindness missions such as writing letters to Mrs. Lyford telling her why they like EMES; sneaking into the kitchen and decorating it; having a surprise party for the office staff; and creating signs for their specials teachers. Other missions have been more individual such as giving someone a compliment or sitting with someone new in the lunch room. They have reached over 100 acts of kindness in less than 3 weeks! I'm very proud of the entire group!
